One of these diagnostic solutions developed is the cobas LIAT (Lab in a Tube) system. The cobas LIAT system is a small, fast and highly accurate point of care diagnostic instrument designed for use in decentralised settings such as GP offices. With molecular testing capabilities, cobas LIAT allows doctors to quickly and accurately detect and identify Influenza A/B. This can help slow down the disease spread by taking the right treatment measures early. In addition, this also helps doctors to avoid the unnecessary prescriptive use of antibiotics.
While there is a recognised need for APAC countries to build capabilities around surveillance, response, prevention and control of influenza, most GPs in the APAC do not currently test for influenza, which can lead to the fast spread of this contagious disease.
To increase the number of fast and reliable influenza diagnoses, and to aid efforts to build monitoring capabilities in the region, Roche Diagnostics is looking to establish geo-mapping capability in the coba LIAT instrument so that real-time diagnostic results are monitored. In turn, these results can reflect the spread of the disease regionally.
